IT’S THE BEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE
Tom Goodfellow, director of Luxury Scottish Wedding Ltd, has an invitation for discerning couples who appreciate only the very best for their special day…
When I first started working in Aberdeen ten years ago, as National Account Manager for Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, I was hooked; I have great affection for the city and people and it’s always a pleasure to return.
I was delighted to host our first show in Aberdeen at the luxurious Chester Hotel last year, and due to the success, we are thrilled to return this year.
The Luxury Scottish Wedding Show is an elegant and engaging show featuring an inspiring collection of luxury wedding exhibitors offering couples a relaxed environment in which to plan their special day. The show is a unique opportunity to meet professionals within the Scottish wedding industry to design your truly memorable day within the surroundings of a luxurious five-star venue.
No loud bands, no loud fashion shows, no hard sell. Our show is about forging relationships – introducing couples to their ideal wedding professional to guide them effortlessly through their big day. We do not encourage the ‘sign up now’ approach - favouring a more relaxed ethos.
We love returning to the multi-ward winning Chester Hotel. Having known Chris, General Manager, for several years from her time in Edinburgh, I fully appreciate her stringent standards of service and commitment and passion for the hospitality industry.
This year, we are delighted to announce our Platinum Partner, The National Trust for Scotland, who have a fantastic repertoire of truly unique venues throughout the Aberdeen and Grampian area including Fyvie Castle, Haddo House and Leith Hall to name a few.
We are excited to again be working our Media Sponsor, Scottish Wedding Directory, who have supported every show since our inaugural show in 2014. Come and collect your FREE magazine on the day.
The award-winning ROX Diamonds & Thrills return as our Retail Partner offering the finest collection of hand-picked, inspiring jewellery.
We are lucky enough to have some amazing exhibitors including House of Turin, Enchanting Merchant Co, Fasque Castle, Ivory Grace, Liana Mitrea Photography to name a few…
Our friends at The Humanist Society Scotland will be conducting informal talks throughout the afternoon - Humanist ceremonies are very personal celebrations based around respect, tolerance, goodness, kindness and concern for each other.
Upon arrival, each couple upon arrival will be welcomed with glass of Prosecco, a gift bag courtesy of ROX Diamonds and Thrills, a show guide and of course us – Tom and Drew!
The Luxury Scottish Wedding Show at The Chester Hotel, Aberdeen takes place on Sunday, April 9 from noon to 4pm. Admission is free. For more information, visit www.luxuryscottishwedding.co.uk

SPOTLIGHT ON…THE LUXURY SCOTTISH WEDDING SHOW
September 19, 2016 By Rachel Lawler
Scotland’s finest stately home, set in a thriving 6,500 acres of natural beauty, Hopetoun House is the perfect location for a wedding show of sheer luxury.
Sunday 2nd October will see The Luxury Scottish Wedding Show return to the stunning venue for a second time, bringing together VIP suppliers. “We create an elegant and engaging show with a relaxed environment; it’s a unique opportunity to meet hand-picked professionals,” explains Tom Goodfellow, Director of Luxury Scottish Wedding.
LSW is a wedding show with a difference. Set in the luxurious surroundings of a five-star luxury wedding venue, all exhibitors have been specially selected and must be a qualified member of Luxury Scottish Wedding to showcase. “Each member is assessed by myself and co-director Drew, who between us, have been in the hospitality industry for 42 years. We assess each member on the standard of their product/venue, service, infrastructure, client reviews, marketing, website and reputation within the industry,” explains Tom.
So, what can brides and grooms-to-be expect from the show? First to note, it’s free entry with each couple receiving a luxury gift bag provided by the LSW’s retail partner Hamilton & Inches. The overall theme of the day is stress-free luxury. “We favour string quartets and harpists to entertain you throughout the afternoon, creating a tranquil ambience,” says Tom. Bridal fashion has a personal approach too, giving brides-to-be a one-to-one with the wedding gowns. “We have bridal models walk around the show to give guests the chance to get up close and feel the quality of the bridalwear, and the models can also talk about their garment.”
Every aspect of your big day is thought about at the show, from venues to inspiration to the ceremony itself. “The Humanist Society Scotland will be conducting informal presentations throughout the afternoon. Hopetoun House will also be open and available for viewing during our show.” If you’re looking for a different type of wedding location, there are many options to consider, with venues accounting for 30% of the exhibitors at the show.
If you’re feeling lucky, Tom says some brides and grooms will leave with some fantastic prizes. “Our exhibitors are offering great competitions on the day, including an overnight stay for four people within a townhouse apartment courtesy of Old Town Chambers.”
Tom is enthusiastic about the upcoming show, particularly with a wealth of positive reviews behind the previous LSW shows. From brides praising the show to exhibitors admiring LSW’s “well organised, busy show with the added benefit that it did not feel like a standard wedding fair,” it is clear to see why Tom is confident in another first class event this autumn.
Echoing Tom’s excitement for the show are two Luxury Scottish Weddings members, both exhibiting in October’s show; Andrew Brookes of Andrew Brookes Tailoring and Scott Robertson from wedding venueBlair Castle.
Andrew has been a LSW member for two years and finds the show a great way to meet new brides and grooms. “Andrew Brookes Tailoring is firmly established as the premier bespoke tailor in Scotland and we work closely with discerning clients who demand the very best. We believe the LSW shows reflect our vision and values,” he tells us.
As a Platinum Partner, Andrew appreciates exhibiting alongside fellow luxury suppliers. “As one of Scotland’s premium brands, we want to work with like-minded organisations who share our passion for delivering the very best of what Scotland can offer.” He is delighted to get the word out there about his brand and meet all the new brides and grooms to help them in the run-up to their wedding. “Being showcased as part of the LSW events helps to further raise our profile and attract the right customers for our business,” says Andrew.
In terms of wedding shows, Andrew is confident brides and grooms will relish the Luxury Scottish Wedding show. “I would say that their experience will be a most enjoyable one. You will be able to talk to the very best Scottish wedding suppliers who are passionate about what they do and who are at the top of their game.”
Agreeing with Andrew is Scott, Business Development Manager of Blair Castle. He finds the show a great fit for the venue. “The Luxury Scottish Wedding shows are aimed at couples and families who have a specific idea in mind for their wedding that suits what Blair Castle can offer. The venues LSW choose for their shows give a lovely atmosphere which is congenial to talking to couples about their special day.”
Like Andrew Brookes Tailoring, Blair Castle is also a Platinum Partner, which Scott says is invaluable. “It helps with the positioning of our venue. The wedding market is very competitive, so LSW is an amazing platform for us to promote Blair Castle to people planning their wedding. It is an essential part of our marketing as there is an amazing reach through their website, social media, blogs and show.”
Resonating with Luxury Scottish Wedding’s aim for a hassle-free show, Scott says it really is all about the fantastic atmosphere at the event. “In addition, people can expect an eclectic mix of luxury venues across Scotland with loads of inspiration for dresses, favours, photography and loads more. It’s a terrific day out!”

Spotlight On… Luxury Scottish Wedding Show
“I’m passionate about hospitality, passionate about weddings and passionate about Scotland,” Tom Goodfellow enthuses when I ask him where he takes his inspiration for Luxury Scottish Weddings from. “Scotland has a huge amount to offer weddings through our tradition, historic venues, music and cuisine. We do weddings so well in Scotland; something that’s envied the world over.”
When it comes to weddings, Tom’s got it covered. He set up the company in 2012 with his husband and co-director Drew Rutherford with his roots firmly in the hospitality industry, a sector he’s worked in for 25 years. “I’ve been lucky to have lived and worked in New Zealand and Australia, but Scotland will always be my home,” Tom tells me.
The company started taking shape after an internet search for luxury wedding venues brought up nothing of note. Tom had his lightbulb moment and Luxury Scottish Weddings was born, a website dedicated to only luxury wedding venues and services.
“We offer a clean, easy to navigate wedding website directory that showcases only the very best in Scotland,” says Tom. “We also host three shows annually at The Balmoral and Hopetoun House in Edinburgh, and The Chester Hotel in Aberdeen.” These elegant and engaging shows feature an inspiring collection of luxury wedding exhibitors offering prospective couples a relaxed environment in which to plan their special day. “The show is a unique opportunity to meet professionals within the Scottish wedding industry to design your truly memorable day,” adds Tom, “and all within the surroundings of a luxurious five-star venue.”
Tom describes his annual shows as rewarding, adding “When it comes to your big day and you have no knowledge of the industry, it can be so overwhelming. I feel so happy that we can provide a great service to couples and wedding suppliers, and bring them together to make their dreams come true.”
So what can you expect if you join Tom and Drew at their first show of 2016 this weekend?
“A relaxed, elegant and engaging experience in a luxurious environment,” promises Tom. “We’re not, and never will be, a large exhibition. Our aim is quality over quantity. No loud music, no catwalks, no hard sell… just high quality venues and service providers on hand to assist you in creating your perfect day.”
And with a glass of fizz in hand, it sounds like the perfect weekend to us.

Interview with The Scottish Government | 11th May 2015
Luxury Scottish Wedding was interviewed by the Scottish Government as part of their Business and Regulatory Impact Assessment (BRIA) on the review of civil partnerships.
The Scottish Government is committed to reviewing civil partnerships, following the introduction of same sex marriage. The remit of the review is at http://www.gov.scot/Resource/0043/00434010.pdf There will be a public consultation, which will include a BRIA. The role of BRIAs is outlined at http://www.gov.scot/Topics/Business-Industry/support/better-regulation/partial-assessments
In broad terms, the public consultation would cover three main options:
Option 1. No change, so civil partnerships would remain open to same sex couples only. (That is the approach that has already been adopted in England and Wales).
Option 2. No more new civil partnerships to be registered in Scotland after a date in the future on the basis that both opposite sex and same sex couples can now marry. This end date might perhaps be two years after any legislation is passed, to give time for couples to make plans. Existing civil partners could remain in their civil partnership if they wish: there would be no obligation on them to change their relationship into a marriage or to dissolve.
Option 3. Open up civil partnership to opposite sex couples. The procedures for entering, and dissolving, an opposite sex civil partnership would be similar to the procedures for entering a same sex civil partnership or a marriage.
Their aim is to issue a consultation in the next month or so. Any legislation would be for after the 2016 Scottish elections.
The white paper is expected to be distributed soon.

WEDDING INDUSTRY EXPECTS 2014 RISE
Superstitious brides-to-be will make this year a bumper one for weddings – after shunning ‘unlucky’ 2013.
Edinburgh weddings expert Tom Goodfellow said fewer couple were prepared to take the plunge last year, with the perceived unluckiness of the date a major factor. But he predicts a reversal in a big year which sees the Commonwealth Games, Ryder Cup and independence referendum taking place in Scotland. Wedding providers are forecasting an inflation-busting rise in income of around 15 per cent as the industry bounces back.
Tom’s website, Luxury Scottish Wedding, surveyed members ahead of its first wedding show on January 19.
Around half had reported a decrease in weddings in 2013, with the drop hitting all aspects of the industry. Tom said: “There are so many superstitious traditions surrounding weddings, it is little wonder brides have been reluctant to book a wedding in 2013. “From not letting the groom see the dress before the big day, to ‘old, new, borrowed and blue’ - even the least superstitious bride may slip a sixpence in her shoe for luck when entering this new stage in her life. “Following this unexpected decrease, 2014 looks set to be a bumper year for weddings.
“Our first ever wedding show at the Balmoral Hotel shows just how popular 2014 weddings are going to be as we have over 30 exhibitors. “The forecast increase in income is good news for Scotland’s wedding sector and the luxury end of the business is where big growth is going to be.” The average spend on a wedding in 2014 is expected to be between £10,000 to £20,000 with an increasing trend towards fewer guests within an exclusive use venue, as opposed to the traditional marquee.
Members of Luxury Scottish Wedding also reported an increase in luxury weddings within high end venues, as well as a vogue for vintage and rustic themes. Other popular trends include homemade favours and decorations, as well as hi tech innovations such as photo booths and Pinterest pages.
The Luxury Scottish Wedding Show is on Sunday 19 January from 12 noon to 4pm at the Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh.

New wedding website aims to help bride and groom with biggest day of their lives
EDINBURGH hospitality worker Tom Goodfellow launched the site after being unimpressed with online help when arranging his own civil partnership.
WEDDINGS whiz Tom Goodfellow felt existing websites failed to recognise the changing face of marriage – so he teamed up with Scotland’s top venues to create his own.
The Edinburgh hospitality worker was unimpressed by the online help on offer when he was trying to arrange his own civil partnership ceremony five years ago.
And he got the same sinking feeling when, as its marketing boss, he was looking for somewhere to promote Carlowrie Castle, near Kirkliston, as a venue.
The former Currie High pupil was confronted with cluttered sites, breathless tips about etiquette on the big day and vast picture galleries of smiling young brides and bridesmaids.
All of which failed to take into account the surge in civil partnerships, the trend towards people getting married at a later age and the fact that around a third of them have been over the course before.
Now Tom, 39, has launched his own website showcasing Scotland’s leading wedding venues. More than 60 have signed up to Luxury Scottish Wedding, including top hotels and Edinburgh city centre’s Assembly Rooms, the Georgian House, the Dome and the Signet Library.
And while the website tells you all you need to know about where to get hitched in style, it makes no assumptions about the couples involved and is devoid of close-ups of radiant young brides in all their finery.
Tom said: “I felt there was nothing in the market that was neutral – it was all very much geared towards the traditional bride, and everything wedding-related was on these sites.
“I just wanted to focus on the very best Scotland has to offer, and it is a very clean, easy-to-navigate site.”
He added: “Weddings have changed over the past 10 years. People are getting married older, civil partnerships are up by 559 per cent since 2005, and second weddings now account for a third of all ceremonies.
“The industry is seeing big growth in the variety of celebrations, and more people are looking for luxury, bespoke weddings. The site filters the very best wedding options.”
Tom, who has also worked at the Fairmont St Andrews and Marriott Dalmahoy hotels, personally checked out many of the venues which are using his site to pitch for a slice of the UK’s £10billion wedding market.
He said: “I have had almost 100 per cent success rate in the venues I have approached.
“If it was not one which I was familiar with, I would visit to get the feel of it, and to see how serious they were about the wedding market and if they had the infrastructure in place.”
Top venues outside Edinburgh which have signed up for the website include Scone Palace, the Old Course Hotel in St Andrews, the Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire and Ayrshire’s Culzean Castle.
And Tom said: “Luxury does not have to mean expensive. Whatever happens in the world, there will always be weddings.”

Press Release | 1 July 2013
SCOTLAND’S LUXURY WEDDING SITE LAUNCHES
Over 50 of Scotland’s luxury venues and providers have signed up to a new site promoting the best the country has to offer for weddings – Luxury Scottish Wedding (www.luxuryscottishwedding.com). With the wedding industry worth an incredible £10 billion to the UK economy, the site aims to draw together the best that Scotland has to offer and increase the market share north of the border.
The new site was created to reflect the changing trends in the wedding sector, including civil partnerships, second weddings and the growing interest in wedding tourism. These factors have changed the face of weddings and given an economic boost to this already lucrative sector.
Created by seasoned hospitality specialist, Tom Goodfellow, the new site offers a one stop shop to happy couples looking to tie the knot in Scotland, in style. Having worked at the Fairmont St Andrews, the Marriott Dalmahoy, the Edinburgh Conference Centre, Heriot-Watt University and Carlowrie Castle, Goodfellow knows what both hospitality providers and buyers are looking for, and in bringing the two together he has hit on a niche – nothing else exists like it.
Goodfellow comments: “Weddings have changed over the past ten years. People are getting married older; civil partnerships are up by 559% since 2005, and second weddings now account for a third of all ceremonies - the industry is seeing big growth in the variety of celebrations, and more people are looking for luxury, bespoke weddings. The site filters the very best wedding options, creating a shop window of excellence – demonstrating what Scotland does best. We are proud to feature not just Scotland’s top venues, but world-class hotels, including The Caledonian – A Waldorf Astoria Hotel, which is very kindly hosting our launch party in July.”
Aiming to secure 200 sign-ups over the next year, many of the highest rated venues in Scotland have already signed up to the website, including the Old Course Hotel in St Andrews, the Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire, and Edinburgh Castle. The site also features luxury wedding photographer Tony Marsh, 21cc fireworks and Ecosse Classic Cars.
